One of the most exciting events of the 59th Session of the General Conference was the 2010 SONscreen Film Festival VIII which ran in the evenings for three days at the RialtoCenter for the Arts at GeorgiaStateUniversity.
As delegates and visitors discussed the business of the church, listened to inspirational thoughts, and reviewed the activities of the church, just a few blocks away, more than 500 Adventist and non-Adventist college-age youth watched film productions which shared creative approaches to witnessing, evangelism, and ministry. The refreshing interpretation by producers and directors of the meaning of Christ in their lives sparked discussions and responses among the creators and the audiences as they mingled for hours.
Jeremy Rowland, producer of “The Prodigal,” believes SONscreen offers a safe venue to meet with like-minded artists surrounded by like-minded film producers. This is an outlet for creative Adventists to explore witnessing opportunities through film.”
Helen Boram and her brother Jonathan “loved it. It was great! Fantastic! I wish a larger audience could see SONscreen. It reaches out to young people and impacts them.”
This is Drake Barber’s first exposure to SONscreen. As a pastor in South Atlantic Conference, “I see a tremendous opportunity for our youth to witness through this medium, and an opportunity to minister to the youth. I wish there was some way for the larger body across the way to be exposed to this fantastic ministry. Where else during this Session have you seen young people gather and talk about ministry?”
Melissa Ford, an aspiring filmmaker and non-Adventist feels “there is a need for this type of festival. It was inspiring and awesome.” Her friend, Victoria Porter, chimed in, “there is a need for faith based films like these. Christians want to see quality programs—messages, lessons, and professional presentations —presented to a good audience. And, you don’t have to compromise.
SONscreen, the brainchild of Stacia Duland Wright, is an annual international film festival for Christian young adults and professionals who are creating outstanding independent film and video productions for outreach, social awareness, and uplifting creative entertainment.
